Hasedera, in Hatsuse, Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, is the head temple of the Buzan branch of Shingon Buddhism and is widely known as the 'Temple of Flowers.' The main hall (National Treasure) is colored by peonies and flowers of every season, and in spring, when over 150 varieties and 7,000 peony plants bloom, it is especially crowded with worshippers. History & Origins

Tradition says it began in 686 (the 1st year of Shucho) when Domyo Shonin enshrined the Bronze Plaque of the Lotus Sutra Preaching Scene, though the actual founding is estimated to be in the first half of the 8th century. It was later developed by Tokudo Shonin, Gyoki and others and drew the devotion of nobles in the Heian period. It is a sacred site of long standing that also appears in 'The Tale of Genji' and 'The Pillow Book.'

Highlights

The main hall (National Treasure) is built in the stage style, jutting out from a rock face, and is a composite structure joining the main sanctuary, worship hall and connecting space. The principal image, a standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu, stands 10.18 m tall and is one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan. The 399 stone steps of the covered stairway (Important Cultural Property) look especially beautiful in peony season.
