History & Origins
Emperor Tenmu founded it in Fujiwara-kyo in 680, and after the capital moved to Heijo-kyo in 710 it was relocated to its present site. As a Hosso school temple it served as a center of learning and prospered in the Nara period as one of the Seven Great Temples of Nara. From the modern period, the Hakuho Garan restoration project has advanced, and the Golden Hall (1976) and West Pagoda (1981), among others, have been rebuilt.
Highlights
The bronze Yakushi Nyorai and two attendants enshrined in the Golden Hall (National Treasure) are representative works of Hakuho sculpture. The surviving Nara-period East Pagoda is a three-storied pagoda with a distinctive design in which each story has a mokoshi (skirt roof), and the bronze standing Kannon Bosatsu in the Toin-do (National Treasure) is also a must-see masterpiece.
