Map

Taikodani Inari Shrine stands in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture, and is counted as one of Japan's Five Great Inari Shrines. It is distinctive for using the characters meaning 'Inari' written with a different second character (the 'Inari' that means 'bring to fruition') rather than the usual form, and is known for blessings of business prosperity and wealth. It lies halfway up a mountain overlooking the Tsuwano Castle ruins, and about 1,000 vermilion torii gates line the approach.

History & Origins

In 1773 (the 2nd year of Anei), Kamei Norisada, the seventh lord of the Tsuwano domain, invited the deity from Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto and founded the shrine, praying for the safety of the castle and the domain. It was afterward revered by successive lords as the guardian of the Tsuwano domain, and today it is still visited from across the country as one of Japan's Five Great Inari Shrines.

Highlights

The approximately 1,000 vermilion torii gates lining the approach are a spectacular sight and create an atmosphere similar to that of Fushimi Inari Taisha. The second character of 'Inari' is also said to carry the meaning of 'a wish will surely be fulfilled.' Its location also makes it easy to combine with sightseeing in Tsuwano, with its white-walled streets and carp-filled canals.

Visitor Guide

It is about a 20-minute walk from Tsuwano Station on the JR Yamaguchi Line, or about 5 minutes by taxi. Climbing the stone steps through the torii gates along the approach leads to the main hall. The view overlooking the town of Tsuwano is also enjoyable.

Best Season

The green season (May to June), when the torii gates stand out, and the autumn leaves season (November) are especially recommended. The Spring Grand Festival (May 15) and the Autumn Grand Festival (November 15 and 16) are filled with festival lively atmosphere.
